REVIEW: Yoga For Diabetes Management

In the UAE, there are over 1 million diabetics and over 17 per cent of adults between 20 and 79 have Type 2 Diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. There are many underlying causes of Type 2 Diabetes such as poor diet, being overweight, inflammation, sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, medication that disrupts insulin, endocrine diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, men with low testosterone levels, toxins, viruses et cetera, pancreatic diseases, genetic syndromes. However, high stress levels and oxidative stress has been isolated as the root cause of insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction,” said a yoga teacher at Bharat Thakur Artistic Yoga.

“Yoga is a 5,000 year old science which has the know-how to cure diabetes. The purpose of 'asana' or a 'posture' is to restore one to stability and ease, both in the body and mind, which results into freedom from the condition."

Top 3 poses to heal diabetes

Paschimottanasana / Seated Forward Bend

Being a forward bend, it massages the abdominal organs, stimulating pancreatic secretions.

Ardha Matsyendrasana / Half Lord of the Fishes Pose

Twisting postures are very beneficial for diabetes. As you twist, the abdominal organs get compressed and blood supply ceases, and as you unwind, the twist is released, the organs receive a gush of oxygenated blood that is energising and stimulating for the optimal functioning of pancreas, ensuring better insulin sensitivity.

Dhanurasana / Bow Pose

This posture stretches the abdomen extensively and leads to a marked improvement in the sensitivity of the ß-Cells of pancreas to glucose signal and also insulin secretion. Stretching the chest and lungs works on the inflatory and deflatory lung reflexes which interact with the central neural element to bring new homeostasis in the body.
