Dubai Airports has launched a new waste management initiative, with the aim to reduce 60% of all waste going to landfills by the middle of 2023.

Announced on World Environment Day, the food waste treatment plan will compost over 2,000 tonnes of food annually from all the food and beverage outlets, lounges and hotels at DXB terminals and concourses.

Created in partnership with Dubai Airports and BEEAH Group, the Sharjah based sustainability company, the high tech biodigester compost system will be installed in various locations to quickly break down the food waste and convert it into reusable compost and clean wastewater.

Additionally, the system converts all the cooking oil used into biodiesel fuel.

The initiative has already achieved a 40% reduction in waste since implementation.
