The Arts Centre at NYU Abu Dhabi has announced the world premiere of a choral performance, 'The Gauntlet: Faraway Together'.
Created by Coco Karol and Sxip Shirey, the event will be held on 31 March at 8pm.
The premiere will be followed by a live online questions and answer session with Coco Karol and Sxip Shirey, and moderated by Arts Centre Executive Artistic Director, Bill Bragin and Director of Artistic Planning, Linsey Bostwick.
A 'Creator’s Workshop: Object-Oriented Composition' will be held on 30 March at 6.30pm, by Sxip Shirey discussing how music can be composed with everyday objects.
The Abu Dhabi edition of 'The Gauntlet' has been re-conceived as a 360-degree spatialised audio piece with every version composed and staged at a specific location. The event was planned for the spring of 2020 but will now be held online.
The sound was created by NYUAD Choral Ensemble along with NYUAD Lecturer of Music Clare Lesser. Every individual's vocals were recorded and transformed into an immersive audio experience.
Sxip Shirey said, "It has been an incredible experience working with the staff, students and community of Abu Dhabi to create The Gauntlet: Faraway Together. Our disappointment at not being able to create and perform in a live space has turned into excitement and humbleness. Excitement over the new process with spatial audio, and humbleness over the stories of the Abu Dhabi community. We all are individuals living in the choir of our community. We hope that The Gauntlet is a way that encourages us to hear the choir clearer."
