Dubai Police Authorised To Use Security Cameras In Public Areas

A new resolution issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, authorises Dubai Police to use security cameras in public areas for various purposes.

According to the resolution, passed on Wednesday, August 26, Dubai Police can now use security cameras to fulfil its duties in public areas including the handling of traffic violations, investigations and ensuring effective security.

Officers are also obligated to abide by legislations governing the use of security cameras, especially those that protect the public’s privacy.

This prohibits the transferring, storing, transmitting or publishing any security footage without a written consent from investigating authorities at Dubai Police or the judicial authority.

An official statement released by the Government of Dubai Media Office said: “Pursuant to the resolution, and without prejudice to civil and penal responsibilities, any Dubai Police officer who violates the articles in this resolution will be subject to disciplinary procedures. The Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police will issue the bylaws required to implement this resolution.”

The resolution will be published in the Official Gazette and considered valid from the date of publication.
