Godoldphin’s Thunder Snow raced to victory at Meydan to win the Dubai World Cup, one of the world’s richest horse races with a total purse of Dhs 44.08 million (US$12 million). With this victory on Saturday, 30 March, Thunder Snow became the first horse ever to win the thrilling world cup race in two consecutive years. Thunder Snow was trained by Saeed bin Suroor and was ridden by Christophe Soumillon.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai lifted the trophy in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and in front of a cheering crowd of more than 72,000 spectators.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed also tweeted congratulations to Godolphin's Thunder Snow and expressed his happiness over a very well organised event.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed also recalled the time when the Dubai World Cup was won by the legendary horse 'Dubai Millennium'.
"I love equestrian sports because every day there is something new in this industry. The passion for equestrian and horses runs in my blood and it is part of our Emirati and Arab heritage" His Highness Sheikh Mohammed said.
Thunder Snow’s win capped a great evening for Goldolphin, the Dubai based stable, who won four out of the nine races on Saturday.
