Dubai Police Recover Dhs 73 Million Diamond

In another crackdown on incidencies of in the UAE, Dubai Police recovered a 9.33 carat diamond worth Dhs 73 million, suspected to be stolen by a security guard in Dubai from the vault of a money transfer company he worked for.

The diamond was recovered in Sri Lanka after it was smuggled out of the UAE in a shoe box by sea.

The police have arrested the suspect, who broke through three security gates to reach the vault, steal the diamond and gave it to a relative who smuggled it out of the UAE by hiding it in a sports shoe box.

In their investigations, police analysed 8,620 hours of surveillance camera footage and questioned over 100 people to trace the thief and arrested him in Abu Dhabi where he was in hiding after committing the theft.

Colonel Mohammed Aqil Ahli, Deputy Director of the Department of Criminal investigation, said, “During the investigation, the Asian suspect told the police that he planned the robbery for 14 days and smuggled the diamond outside the UAE with the help of a relative who shipped the diamond in a sports shoe box to Sri Lanka. He thought that he would keep hiding for some time and then leave for his country to achieve his dream of becoming a millionaire. He had a security background which helped him steal the diamond”.

“The suspect had not been talking to his relatives and was hiding in Abu Dhabi at the time of his arrest”, Col Ahli added.

Dubai Police efficiently solved the case with the help of artificial intelligence systems and other advanced technology.
