Waitrose Is 'Going Green' By Doing This

Sustainability is pioneering its way across the world, with brands altering their production to make way for a greener planet. Waitrose has officially announced its own commitment to plastic reduction across its UAE stores. The new trial initiative is aimed at encouraging shoppers to change their habits when it comes to plastic bag usage. Partnering with Emirates Wildlife Society-WWF, the British supermarket will introduce a trial scheme from 16 June to charge for plastic bags in five stores across Abu Dhabi.

Matthew Frost, CEO of Fine Fare Food Market said: “The challenge around plastic is underway and we want to be the supermarket leading that charge for the retail industry, fostering positive change and helping to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

It’s more important than ever for companies to take responsibility for their part in helping to reduce avoidable plastic waste and we believe that in order to bring about change, we need to help our customers make small shifts in their behaviour, to eventually lead to positive habits.”

The trial will run for 12 weeks until 8 September. It has not been commented on as to whether Dubai’s stores will follow the same initiative.
