Buildings in Dubai will now be charged for disposing of waste

Soon, Dubai Municipality will stop doing the rounds of all Dubai communities, collecting waste and transporting it to landfills. You or your building will now be held accountable for waste disposal.

Waste will now be charged based on the amount disposed of after Dubai Municipality announced it will outsource waste collection to the private sector, according to a report in Gulf News.

According to the report, a senior municipality official confirmed that the civic body would stop the waste collection and transportation service to all buildings that are considered as business — whether commercial or residential — after it announces the proposed tipping fee levied upon the quantity of waste received.

Pay as you throw is a usage-pricing model for disposing of municipal solid waste.

Users will be charged a rate based on how much waste they present for collection to the municipality or local authority.

Director of the Waste Management Department Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie said, “The building owners or property management companies will have to make a contract with private companies approved by the municipality for collecting and transporting waste to landfills.”

This to will be done zone-wise, with three companies allocated for each zone.

Outsourcing waste management services to a trusted partner can reduce risk, decrease costs, and improve operational efficiencies.

It is yet to be announced as to whether the building administrations will pass on this load to tenants or make arrangements themselves with companies for pick up.
