Since Sunday 15 October when the speed limit on Emirates and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads was reduced from 120kph to 110kph more than 2,400 speeding violations have been recorded according to Dubai Police. The decision to reduce speed limits on these roads was taken to cut down on the number of traffic accidents and improve the safety of road users.
Despite mass media coverage informing motorists of the reduced speed limits well in advance, there were many motorists who simply didn’t heed the warning or complained that they weren’t aware. There were 1,017 fines handed out on Sunday and over 1,400 on Monday.
An Arab man from Abu Dhabi committed five speeding violations in one day and complained to Dubai Police that he wasn’t aware despite being able to read the road signs and being flashed by five sperate cameras.
Dubai Police expect there to be further violations this week.
