A 17.5kg tumour has been removed from an Emirati woman’s abdomen in life saving surgery performed by Dr Amal Al Qedrah.
The 35 year old patient was admitted to Latifa Hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain.
“The screening showed that the tumour was between 35-40 cm and caused great pressure on the patient’s organs including the lungs and she could have died,” said Dr Amal Al Qedrah the head of obstetrics and gynaecology department at the hospital.
Dr Amal said the condition was rare and the tumour is the largest one ever removed in any of Dubai Health Authority’s hospitals.
The patient is expected to make a full recovery and return home this week.
