Starting 15 June, the UAE will reintroduce its annual midday break, prohibiting outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12.30pm and 3pm daily, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). The restriction will remain in effect until 15 September, safeguarding workers during the peak summer heat.
The midday break initiative, which has been running for 21 consecutive years, reflects the UAE’s continued commitment to labour welfare and occupational safety, especially in sectors like construction and landscaping where outdoor exposure is high.
MoHRE will closely monitor compliance through field inspections and smart tracking systems. Companies violating the ban may face fines of Dhs 5,000 per affected worker, up to a maximum of Dhs 50,000 if several workers are employed during the prohibited hours.
Authorities have urged private companies to provide workers with special amenities and essential supplies during the ban period, including shaded areas for workers to protect them from the heat during off-duty periods, as well as appropriate cooling equipment such as fans and sufficient quantities of water.
Authorities have reiterated that protecting workers during summer is a shared responsibility, and the midday break remains a critical step in ensuring worker health and well being during extreme conditions.
