Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street, stretching from its intersection with Jumeirah Street all the way to Al Khail Road, as part of a wider strategy to transform the city’s road network and enhance urban mobility.
The current upgrades to Umm Sequim Street aims to cut travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from twenty minutes to just six minutes, increase the road’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour, and create seamless connectivity across four major corridors, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.
Beyond improving traffic flow, the project includes upgraded pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, and a direct pedestrian-friendly access to Mall of the Emirates Metro Station.
The project is part of a wider master plan by RTA to develop the Umm Suqeim-Al Qudra corridor, which will ultimately enable uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road over a total distance of twenty kilometres.
According to RTA officials, the corridor will directly serve more than two million residents across communities like Jumeirah, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Umm Al Sheif, Al Quoz and Umm Suqeim.
Key Developments
Six key intersections along Umm Suqeim Street, specifically those with Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road, will be upgraded with four bridges and three tunnels covering around four kilometres in total. These include a two-lane tunnel at the intersection of Umm Sequim Street with Jumeirah Street and a second two-lane tunnel at Al Wasl Street for smooth flow from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Jumeirah Street.
Work In Progress
As part of this upgrade, RTA is currently advancing works at the intersection at Al Barsha South, near Kings' School, through the construction of an 800-metre tunnel comprising four lanes in each direction. This is set to be completed later this year.
