Abu Dhabi Launches 'Dark Sky Policy'

Abu Dhabi Media Office

The Department of Municipalities and Transport-Abu Dhabi has introduced the 'Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy' to safeguard the night sky and promote a sustainable future across the emirate. To raise awareness about this initiative, an extensive campaign titled 'Discover the Beauty of Abu Dhabi’s Sky' will be launched, aiming to educate both residents and visitors about the significance of preserving the night sky.

This pioneering effort, the first of its kind in the region, addresses the growing issue of light pollution by advocating for responsible lighting practices. Aligned with the global efforts of the International Dark Sky Association, the policy advocates for sustainable lighting systems, conservation of the natural environment and wildlife, support for astronomy research, promotion of public health, and advancement of sustainable development.

Applicable to both public and private sectors, except cultural festivals and events, the policy's primary directives will focus on existing and future outdoor lighting fixtures.

How Does This Work

  • Inspection of interior lighting in private spaces like homes and businesses will assess its impact on outdoor light and visual pollution.
  • Cooperation from all concerned parties is essential to adhere to the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy, along with related manuals and the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System.
  • A methodology to combat light pollution has been established, accompanied by educational programs to raise awareness about preserving Abu Dhabi's night sky.
  • Offenders of the policy will be given a grace period to make necessary adjustments to their lighting setups.

Where Will The Regulations Come In Place

The rules will cover various areas such as public buildings, streets, parks, beaches, commercial establishments, open spaces, agricultural and industrial zones, and others. They include shielded lighting, exterior and facade lights, motion-activated security lighting, and synchronised turning off of non-security lights by midnight.
