If you love walking in Dubai but are often bothered by the sun and unpredicted rainfall, do not worry; Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has the perfect solution for you. RTA has collaborated with UmbraCity, a leading Canadian smart umbrella share service company, to introduce a free smart umbrella service at the Al Ghubaiba Bus and Metro station. This initiative aims to improve Dubai's walkability by offering residents and visitors a convenient and eco-friendly solution to protect themselves from the sun and rain.
The introduction of the 'free umbrella service' is in line with Dubai's 2040 Urban Master Plan, showcasing the city's dedication to creating a sustainable, healthy, and inclusive urban environment. Through the collaboration between RTA and UmbraCity, Dubai aims to fulfil its vision of becoming the world's best city for living.
How Does The Smart Umbrella Service Works
- The free umbrella service is currently available at Al Ghubaiba Bus and Metro station as a trial for three months.
- RTA will assess its success before deciding on potential expansion.
- You can borrow umbrellas for free using your nol card, promoting ease of mobility and environmental sustainability.
- The service aligns with Dubai's aim to create a '20-minute city', where residents can reach their daily needs within a 20-minute walk or bike ride.
- This initiative fosters a stronger sense of community and well-being by promoting accessibility and reducing reliance on cars.
Khaled Al Awadhi, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said, "By encouraging the use of smart umbrellas which are ‘Free of cost’ when leased using nol card, RTA and UmbraCity are contributing to the creation of vibrant, healthy, and inclusive communities across Dubai."
Amir Entezari, CEO of UmbraCity said, "We are honoured to partner with RTA and bring UmbraCity's innovative umbrella-sharing service to the heart of Dubai. This collaboration reflects our mutual dedication to advancing sustainable urban mobility and enhancing the livability of cities. Together, we are setting a global benchmark for smart, sustainable urban living, demonstrating that with innovative solutions and collaborative efforts, we can make significant strides towards building cities that prioritise the well-being of their communities and the environment."
