The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi, has announced the commencement of several strategic projects that boast unique and impressive designs. These projects, with a budget that exceeds Dhs 3 billion, are aimed at improving traffic safety, enhancing connectivity between different regions and commercial areas, enhancing traffic flow, reducing congestion and providing new and innovative mobility solutions. The ultimate goal of these projects is to help ITC achieve its vision of maintaining a sustainable integrated transport system that meets the expectations and needs of its customers.
What Are The Key Projects
The 25km Mid-island Parkway is the largest and most intricate project that connects the mainland and island of Abu Dhabi through mid-island. The road comprises four to five lanes and provides entrances and exits to the islands, such as Al Sammaliyyah, Umm Yifienah, Al Saadiyat, Al Reem ssland among others. The road has a capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 vehicles per hour in each direction.
To handle the project's magnitude, the operations have been split into two phases. The first phase connects Al Saadiyat Island and Umm Yifienah Street to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street and Al Reem Island. The second phase connects Umm Yifeenah Island to Al Raha Beach, the E10 road, Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street (E20), and Madinat Zayed.
The project's objective is to provide service and connect development projects throughout the island of Abu Dhabi. Additionally, it aims to reduce traffic congestion and traffic volume on the main roads that connect the island of Abu Dhabi to the mainland.
Musaffah Road Traffic Improvements Project (E30)
The ITC has announced a major project that focuses on traffic improvements on the Musaffah Road (E30). The project aims to address a variety of existing challenges, such as clearing traffic junctions on the road in both directions, reducing traffic congestion on the E30 road's existing upper four intersections, and several internal intersections inside the Musaffah area and Mohamed bin Zayed City. Additionally, the project includes the construction of two new bridges to enhance connectivity between Mohamed bin Zayed City and Mussafah.
The primary objective of the project is to increase the road's capacity and improve traffic flow while also enhancing safety, connectivity with commercial areas through new bridges, and creating improvements to the upper and inner intersections.
Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street Improvements (E20)
One of the current projects is dedicated to enhancing the traffic situation on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street (E20), which connects the airport intersection and the Bridges Complex intersection. This project aims to improve traffic flow between Khalifa City and Zayed City while reducing congestion at the entrances and exits of Khalifa City. To achieve this, the project involves upgrading the existing intersection (IC3) and constructing a new entrance to Khalifa City and Zayed City through a new intersection (IC5). Additionally, the project includes increasing the road's vehicle capacity by adding two more lanes, bringing the total number of lanes to five.
New Bridges On Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road (E22) and 79th Street In Mohamed bin Zayed City
ITC is planning to implement a project at the intersection of Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road and Mohamed bin Zayed Street. The main aim is to enhance traffic capacity from the south of E22 road towards Mohamed bin Zayed City on 79th Street and north of E22 towards Abu Dhabi University, ultimately improving the road's vehicle capacity. As part of this project, ITC will also be working on adjusting the two intersections at Mazyad Mall and Capital Mall. Moreover, new traffic junctions will be introduced to improve vehicle flow through entrances and exits to the area.
