Dubai based Emirates Airlines, has introduced an exclusive capsule collection of luggage, bags, and accessories crafted from recycled materials sourced from repurposed aircraft components. This limited-edition series includes suitcases, backpacks, handbags, cardholders, toiletry bags, belts, and shoes. All these items are designed and handcrafted by Emirates tailors in a specialised cabin workshop within the Emirates Engineering facility in Dubai.
Scheduled for sale in 2024 in Emirates Official Stores, the selection of bags and accessories will also be on display at the Dubai Airshow in DWC, from 13 to 17 November, on the Emirates stand. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to children in need via the Emirates Airline Foundation.
The stylish collection's materials are sourced from the iconic Emirates A380 and 777 aircraft. A variety of materials, like aluminium from headrests, leather from A380 onboard lounge couches, seatbelts, and even fur from the captain's seat, have been repurposed for crafting the luggage and bags.
Adding to the uniqueness of this collection is the fact that each piece is handmade to order. Customers might have the option to request personalised laser engravings on select exclusive bags, suitcases, or document holders. Aviation enthusiasts will have the opportunity to express their interest, but these distinctive pieces are available in limited quantities.
Emirates has a team of 14 'tailors' known as Engineering Maintenance Assistants. Their primary responsibility is to mend tears in the interiors of Emirates' extensive aircraft fleet. Currently, four of these tailors are full-time for the upcycling project, creating upcycled products and partnering with suppliers to explore innovative ways of repurposing different materials.
