Waste To Energy Centre Launched

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has launched the first phase of the Waste to Energy Centre in Warsan, International City.

The largest and most efficient plant in the world was built at a cost of Dhs 4 billion, and converts waste from landfills into renewable energy that is used to generate electricity, with recycled water powering the turbines at the facility.

The plant has the capacity to treat around 2 million tonnes of solid waste yearly, which can then produce 220 MW per hour of electricity, powering 135,000 housing units.

Carbon emissions will reduce by 2,400 tonnes, as the waste does not end up in landfills.

The plant has the capacity to convert the waste generated by 3 million people per day into energy, and has five lines that can treat 5,666 tonnes of solid waste daily.

The centre is in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 which aims to convert 75% of energy from clean sources by 2050.
