In celebration of World Turtle Day on 23 May, Sharjah Aquarium along with Sharjah Museum Authority, has released eight green and hawksbill turtles at Al Hamriyah Beach in Sharjah.
After being found in poor condition, the turtles underwent rehabilitation programmes to restore their health.
The injured turtles were aged between 5 to 30 years old, and were found by local fishermen.
The turtles were released back into their natural habitat, after health assessments and necessary care was provided.
Around 30 turtles have been released since 2009 as part of the 'Because We Care' initiative launched by Sharjah Museum Authority.
Green turtles are endangered species that can grow up to a length of 120cm. They have the ability to live over 70 years, and their name comes from the green hue of their bodies.
Hawksbill turtles are also classified as endangered species, and have a distinctive beak-like mouth. They can live for around 50 years and can grow up to 114cm in length.
