How Did It All Start With Reema Mahajan
Indian Women Dubai stands as one of the UAE's most substantial communities, uniting over 100,000 Indian women who provide support, company, and business assistance to each other while navigating life in Dubai. Established in 2019 by Reema Mahajan, a dual engineering graduate from IIT Delhi and MBA holder from IIM Bangalore, the community emerged from Reema's experiences. Having transitioned from London to Dubai after a decade-long career with Bain and Company, Reema faced challenges of settling in a new city. Recognising the need for a robust support system, the expat group- Indian Women Dubai was born, offering a platform for Indian women to connect, thrive in business, and embrace life in the vibrant emirate.
Hailing from Chandigarh, India, Reema Mahajan has successfully grown a community of over 100,000 women in Dubai, with an impressive 62,000 members on the Facebook platform alone. Reflecting on the early days, Reema shared,
"When I started this community on Facebook, our first meet-up comprised only 5 women, so yes, the journey had challenges, but it has been equally rewarding and empowering. Initially in Dubai, I struggled to understand the best schools for my kids, ideal residential areas, shopping destinations, and other basic aspects. That realisation fuelled the creation of Indian Women Dubai, a community dedicated to helping numerous Indian women smoothly navigate their lives in Dubai."
Pandemic And Indian Women Dubai Community
Reema Mahajan, recognised among Asia’s 100 Rising Women Power Leaders for 2023, highlights that Indian Women Dubai experienced significant growth on social media during the pandemic. Starting with just hundreds of members, the community expanded to over 30,000 during the Covid-19 era.
Reema shared, "Covid truly changed my life in multiple ways. Not only did many women join the community, but the core team at Indian Women Dubai also organised various free zumba, meditation, and other sessions for women during the pandemic. It facilitated connections among women, particularly those newly relocated to Dubai. I also made the decision to leave my full-time job during Covid to lead the Indian Women Dubai group full-time, and I am glad I took that step."
The community's growth was fuelled by word of mouth, attracting more women to join. Reema envisions building a lively and robust community of women committed to offering steadfast personal, emotional, and professional support to each other.
Core Pillars Of Indian Women Dubai Community
Since its inception, Indian Women Dubai has assisted over 5,000 women entrepreneurs, organised over 100 in-person events and meet-ups and has fostered partnerships with nearly 500 brands.
The core principles of the Indian Women Dubai community are founded on the belief that "When Women Support Each Other, Incredible Things Happen." Additionally, Indian Women Dubai is committed to empowering entrepreneurs. Every Sunday 'homepreneurs' can promote their businesses for free on the community's Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
