The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced that ahead of the UAE hosting COP28, students in schools will be taught the importance of combating climate change.
With the help of the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to target issues that are prevalent in society, the green education initiative will help students make the right decisions to tackle climate change and its effects on the world.
The plan includes the UAE Green Education Partnership, which will incorporate Sustainable Development Goals into the UAE’s educational system.
UNESCO will also collaborate with the MoE to build the first education pavilion at COP28 to increase awareness of the issues faced by the world.
Additionally, MoE will transform 50% of all the schools and campuses in the UAE to be green accredited and will provide training to over 2,400 educators and 1,400 principals.
The 'Children’s Voice' initiative will also be launched, offering young people training opportunities to participate in decision-making processes on the future of the environment and its conservation.
Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Education said, "Individual behaviours toward climate change are still the key to making a real impact, and with that comes the significant role of education in shifting minds, actions, and attitudes about the environment today, and in the future. At the Ministry of Education, we have a critical role to play to advance the role of education in addressing climate change, by building environment-friendly curricula and schools and training educators to build sustainable green communities. The UAE's hosting of COP28 presents another opportunity to highlight the country's efforts in this field and mobilise international efforts to include green education within educational systems in the region and the world."
