We’ve all heard of a lunar eclipse, but now the incredibly rare ‘super blue blood moon’ will be visible over Dubai tomorrow January 31.
This rare event only occurs every 152 years and has been described as a lunar trifecta. It consists of three lunar phenomenon that take place all at once: a super moon, blue moon and a lunar eclipse.
To break it down a super moon is rare on its own. It’s when the moon is closest to the Earth, so it will be viewed as much larger than usual. Next, a blue moon, which is a little more common, is when a month consists of two full moons occurrences. Lastly, and most exciting, is the lunar eclipse, when the super moon will pass through the Earth’s shadow it will transform into a red hue, thus resulting in a ‘blood moon’. Put all these incredible manifestations together and you get the ‘super blue blood moon’.
The eclipse itself will last only three to four minutes and can be seen with the naked eye just after 6pm, with the best viewing time to be 6:04pm. While the super moon will last all night. The Dubai Astronomy Group will be organizing a viewing event at Mushrif Park with entry priced at Dhs 20, but they also advise to view it at an elevated location with a clear view.
Be sure to gather your friends and family for this incredible event, who knows when it’ll happen again.
