Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the contract for the development of Umm Suqeim Street, Al Wasl Road, Al Safa Street, and seven intersections along Jumeirah Street. The project aims to improve traffic flow, increase road capacity and make daily journeys easier for residents and visitors, serving over 2 million residents across major districts.

The development will include the construction of bridges and tunnels stretching around 11,000 metres in total, along with the widening of several roads. Once complete, the project will increase the capacity of Umm Suqeim Street to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Al Wasl Road and Al Safa Street will each be able to handle 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Traffic aside, the project will also include pedestrian walkways, a cycling track, public boulevard plazas and urban spaces that promote community interaction and improve the lifestyle.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said the project forms part of an integrated plan developed by RTA to upgrade roads across the area, covering Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl and Al Safa streets.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer said, “Achieving smooth traffic flow across the emirate requires the continuous and integrated development of the road network, alongside the expansion of public transport and the adoption of smart solutions. RTA is moving ahead with a comprehensive plan to upgrade several vital corridors across the area, keeping pace with population growth and urban expansion, enhancing daily mobility for Dubai’s residents and visitors, and reinforcing the emirate’s global leadership in infrastructure.”

Umm Suqeim Street

The Umm Suqeim Street development will run from the intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. This will improve links between four major routes in Dubai, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.

The work will reduce journey time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to 6 minutes. It will also serve areas including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha and Al Quoz.

Al Wasl Road

Al Wasl Road will be upgraded over a 15 kilometre stretch from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street. The road will be widened from two lanes to three lanes in each direction.

Seven intersections will also be improved, including those with Al Thanya Street, Al Manara Street, Umm Al Sheif Street, Umm Amara Street, Al Urouba Street, Al Hudaiba Street and 2nd December Street. The upgrades are expected to cut journey time on Al Wasl Road by 50%.

Al Safa Street

The Al Safa Street project will cover 1,500 metres between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl Road. It includes two bridges, two tunnels, road widening and traffic signal upgrades.

Once complete, journey time on Al Safa Street will be reduced from 12 minutes to 3 minutes. The project will also improve traffic movement between Financial Centre Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Safa Street and Al Wasl Road.

Jumeirah Street

The project will also upgrade seven intersections along Jumeirah Street, including intersections at Al Thanya Street, Al Manara Street, Umm Al Sheif Street, Al Urouba Street, 39B Street, Al Hudaiba Street and 2nd December Street. These improvements aim to reduce congestion and support smoother traffic movement across the area.
