Sky watchers across the UAE are in for a celestial treat tonight on Tuesday, 7 October, as the first Supermoon of the year lights up the night sky. Known as the 'Hunter Supermoon', it will appear brighter and larger than usual, creating a spectacular sight after sunset. It will be visible for typically three nights, which is, until 9 October this year.

The Supermoon phenomenon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, known as perigee, giving it that glowing, oversized appearance. It is traditionally called the 'Hunter Supermoon', because it marks the time of year when hunters were once most active, taking advantage of the moonlight to track and hunt as autumn turned to winter.

To celebrate the occasion, the Dubai Astronomy Group will host a special viewing session on 7 October, at Al-Awir Second Park from 7pm to 9pm, where participants can observe the Supermoon at its peak around 8.15pm. Tickets are priced from Dhs 100, offering enthusiasts an expert-guided experience. For more details, visit Dubai Astronomy Group's website.

Following the Hunter Moon, stargazers can look forward to two more Supermoons this year, the 'Beaver Supermoon' in November, and the 'Cold Moon' in December, each marking a seasonal shift in the lunar calendar.
