The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has begun work on an AI-driven traffic signal control system—UTC-UX Fusion—to optimise traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve road efficiency. The next-generation system is expected to be fully operational by the first half of 2026, marking a major step toward smart mobility solutions in the emirate.
The UTC-UX Fusion system will integrate artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and digital twin technology to manage Dubai’s growing traffic more effectively. According to Hussain Al Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, the system will use real-time traffic data to dynamically adjust signal timings, reducing congestion by 10 to 20%.
Key Features
- Predictive traffic analysis: AI-powered forecasting will anticipate traffic movements and adjust signal timings accordingly.
- Digital twin technology: A virtual replica of Dubai’s road network will simulate signal adjustments before implementing them in real-time.
- Priority-based traffic management: The system will prioritise emergency vehicles and public transport, ensuring smoother traffic flow.
- Smart sensor integration: Data from road sensors and smart vehicles will refine signal timings for better efficiency.
- Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X): This will enable communication between smart vehicles and traffic signals, enhancing overall mobility.
