Abu Dhabi’s parks are redefining their role, moving beyond leisure spaces to become hubs for interactive learning. Through tailored educational programs, students of all ages now have the chance to explore biodiversity, discover native species, and learn the values of sustainability directly in nature.
Umm Al Emarat Park has become a model for this initiative. Since its launch in 2016, more than 80,000 students have taken part in its workshops, with over 3,300 participating in the current academic year alone. Programs are designed for different school levels, from animal and plant exploration for primary students to studies on ecosystems, Bedouin traditions, and desert adaptation for older learners.
"The park aims to combine learning and fun in the heart of nature, opening doors of discovery for students through interactive experiences", said Rasha Qabbalawi, spokesperson for Umm Al Emarat Park, highlighting the park’s mission to strengthen connections with heritage while promoting sustainability.
Abu Dhabi City Municipality is expanding this concept across more public parks with facilities and programs that teach biodiversity, water conservation and recycling.
Plans are underway to work with education authorities, including Ministry of Education and the Department of Education and Knowledge, to weave green spaces into school curricula, turning parks into living laboratories that inspire future generations.
