The UAE's Ministry of Education has issued new attendance and absence guidelines for public schools, effective from the 2025-26 academic year.
The updated system sets a maximum of 15 unexcused absences per year, after which students may be required to repeat the academic year
Parents will now receive instant notifications after the first unexcused absence. A sequence of written alerts and warnings will follow, with repeated cases referred to the Ministry’s Child Protection Unit for further review. Absences on Fridays or days preceding or following public holidays will count as two days, underscoring the importance of attendance during these periods.
The guidelines also outline acceptable reasons for absence, including illness, medical travel, emergencies, and participation in national or international events. Special provisions are in place for students of determination and those with chronic illnesses.
Schools are required to provide support plans for students at risk of frequent absences, including counselling, parent engagement, and incentive programs to encourage attendance.
The Ministry stressed the role of parents in monitoring attendance and maintaining updated contact information. Families also have the right to file an appeal within five working days of an absence notification, ensuring fairness in the process.
These measures form part of broader efforts to enhance school discipline, improve achievement levels, and instil values of responsibility and accountability among students.
