May 2017: Mary Rose Lelis

Name: Mary Rose Lelis
Nationality: Filipino

Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I never thought I would become a teacher and it was never my dream either, I think it was just destined to be.

How would you describe your teaching style?
I teach in a way that learning becomes more interesting and interactive. I am more of a facilitator when I am teaching because I want my students to discover the concept rather than just directly teaching it to them.

Your best moment as a teacher
During a teacher’s day programme, 40 students who I had trained and worked with as their advisor showed their appreciation of my work by performing and dedicating a song to me. Then they all gave me a rose at the end, I was overwhelmed by their appreciation.

One sentence of advice to parents?
Your kids need support and encouragement when it comes to their school progress.

One sentence of advice to someone wanting to enter the profession?
Teaching is all about the students. You need to have patience and love for the students to do whatever it takes to help them learn and what we want them to become.

What would be your life quote?
Every single thing that has ever happened in your life is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come.

A funny story from the classroom?
It was my birthday, all the students in one of my classes surprised me by wearing a mask with the picture of my favourite actor.
