April 2016: Mark Mullan

Name: Mark Mullan
Nationality: Scottish (British)

How would you describe your teaching style?

I aim to teach in a way that allows students to be independent learners while actively participating and collaborating with each other. I believe students should be motivated to challenge themselves by taking risks and having the confidence to try something new.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I wanted to inspire young minds. It is an amazing opportunity to support students in reaching their full potential.

Your best moment as a teacher?

Every time you see a child succeed in something they initially perceive to be a challenge.

Your worst moment?

When you realise a student is facing difficult circumstances and you can’t do anything to help.

One sentence of advice to parents?

Have high expectations of your children but always remember they are still young and their learning experiences should be fun.

One sentence of advice to someone wanting to enter the profession?

Be prepared for a challenge… but a challenge worth taking!

A funny story from the classroom.

Reading a medical report on an injured butterfly to my class when they rescued it after it had escaped from the nearby Butterfly Garden (which was fabricated by our humorous school receptionist!). I’ve never lived it down.

Best quote/question/expression from a child.

‘This is the best day! Ever!’

What would be your life quote?

‘Never stop looking to learn!’

Mark Mullan is at Safa Community School.
