The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has launched a back-to-school awareness campaign, to ensure students follow healthier lifestyles as they return to school for the new academic year.
Running until 31 August, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of taking preventative health measures, incorporating physical activity and a balanced diet into daily routines, as well as regulating sleep and monitoring screen time.
Some of the preventative measures to be followed are:
- Washing hands with soap and water
- Covering the mouth and nose with either a tissue or elbow, when sneezing and coughing
- Staying at home when ill, or wearing face masks to school
MoHAP has also provided some nutrition tips to ensure a child's well-being including:
- Take a teaspoon of all-natural honey
- Make sure children get five servings of fruits and vegetables daily
- Incorporate immunity-boosting food like probiotics from dairy products and yogurt, and omega-3 from fish, unsalted and unroasted nuts
As part of the campaign, six community events were also held along with Lulu Hypermarkets, where a series of healthy cooking workshops were hosted by expert chefs, to encourage parents to make nutritious meals for school. Additionally, health educators highlighted the importance of incorporating the 5210 concept, which includes five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, limiting screen time to less than two hours, an hour of physical activity, and avoiding sugary and energy drinks.
The campaign is in line with MoHAP's strategy to increase the quality of life through health and preventative programs and ensure health-conscious practices are followed during the academic year.
MoHAP will also partner with education and health facilities, to raise awareness on seasonal influenza and respiratory diseases. Annual vaccination drives will be held to ensure students are protected from various diseases and viruses.
His Excellency Dr Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector said, "As the school bells chime once more, our priority will continue to be furnishing both students and educators with the right tools and knowledge to foster a safe and health-conscious environment. The Ministry's collaboration with educational institutions is not just cursory but deep-rooted, stemming from a shared goal: to emphasise the role of proper nutrition in our schools. After all, a nutritious diet doesn't just affect a child's physical growth; but is integral to their cognitive development and academic performance."
