Cyber-Attack On Careem

Careem users, read on.

If you use Careem, the Middle East based taxi booking service, you may have received a notification of a certain breach of data. A cyber-attack affecting the data of 14 million customers and drivers to be exact.

The company became aware of the issue back on 14 January and messaged affected users on Monday apologising and explaining the situation. Any customers who signed up after 14 January were not included in the data of the 14 million individuals that were.

The data stolen includes names, email addresses, and phone numbers although Careem has confirmed that no credit card information or passwords have been compromised. They took to social media to address concerns of users and affirm that passports and credit card information is held in another system:

Operating in over 90 cities, Careem said in the statement that they are currently still investigating the situation with official authorities and to be cautious of suspicious and unsolicited activity.
