Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled plans for a next-generation autonomous transport system that could significantly reshape urban travel and ease congestion across the emirate. The announcement, made during the World Governments Summit 2026, detailed the launch of the Glydways system, a fleet of fully autonomous electric pods designed to offer fast, flexible, and sustainable point-to-point transport options.
The new system consists of compact self-driving vehicles that run on dedicated, narrow guideways roughly the width of a bicycle lane. These purpose-built guideways allow the pods to operate independently of regular traffic, minimising disruptions while maximising efficiency and safety. The design enables easier integration into existing road infrastructure, reducing the need for major construction work.
Each Glydways pod is an electric vehicle capable of carrying four to six passengers, with an operational range of up to 250 kilometres on a single charge and a top speed of around 50kph. Besides, the system is expected to carry more than 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, providing fast and reliable service across multiple corridors.
Several trial routes were showcased at the summit, connecting the Bluewaters Island and the National Paints Metro Station, Mall of the Emirates Metro Station to Madinat Jumeirah, a service between OnPassive Metro Station and Alserkal Avenue, and a service within Dubai Festival City.
Fares for the Glydways service are expected to be comparable to traditional bus or metro tickets, making the system an accessible, affordable alternative for daily commuters. Rides will be available on demand and bookable through digital platforms, reflecting Dubai’s broader push toward smart, user-centric mobility solutions.
The RTA plans to begin trial operations later this year, with a full network rollout targeted within the next two years.
