The UAE Ministry of Education has officially scrapped mandatory homework for students from Kindergarten through Grade 2 in public schools, making foundational learning in classroom hours ahead of the 2026 - 2027 academic year.
Announced by Her Excellency Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education of the UAE, the move forms part of six major reforms designed to transition the national education framework from theoretical instruction to practical, skill-based learning. The change aims to support early childhood development, reduce academic pressure on young learners, and ensure a healthier work-life balance for families.
Under the new directive, schools and teaching staff in public schools are tasked with ensuring foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics are fully mastered during regular school hours without relying on after-school assignments. Additional measures announced alongside the policy include stricter controls on electronic devices in classrooms, an expansion of project-based evaluations, and comprehensive performance assessments for government schools.
