Emirates Recycles Over Half A Million Kilograms Of Plastic

Emirates

Emirates, in 2022, recycled and repurposed over 500,000kg of plastic and glass from collecting discarded bottles onboard.

The amount collected weighs the equivalent of almost a fully loaded Emirates A380 aircraft.

Plastic bottles and glass are separated on board by the cabin crew, and are then sent to a recycling plant in Dubai.

The glass from there is crushed by colour and will be remelted to send to glass manufacturers to reuse.

Similarly, the plastic bottles are cleaned, chopped into flakes, turned into pellets and sent to plastic manufacturers.

Additionally, the airline, for the last six years, has been using recycled plastic bottles to turn into sustainable blankets by shredding bottles into chips and turning them into yarn.

The amenity kits given onboard the premium economy and economy class are also sustainable, with the pouches made from kraft paper, the toothbrush made with wheat straw and plastic, and the socks and eye covers made with recycled plastic.
