The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has launched the Points for Plastic: The Bus Tariff initiative that will offer passengers in Abu Dhabi free public transport rides.
On handing in empty plastic bottles, passengers will be given points which can then be used to pay for bus rides.
The first phase of the initiative will see a deposit machine installed at the main bus station in Abu Dhabi to exchange the bottles.
A small bottle of 600ml or less is worth one point and bottles exceeding 600ml mount up to two points.
Each point is equivalent to 10 fils with ten points adding up to Dhs 1 which can then be transferred to the Hafilat bus card.
