Earlier this month, firefighters doused a second blaze at Torch Tower in Dubai Marina. Investigations reveal the cause of the fire was a ‘recklessly tossed cigarette’. Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police stated, during a dialogue session between police, civil defence and the private sector, that a tossed cigarette butt landed in a plant pot on a balcony causing the fire, with the blaze then spreading to the cladding of the building. Dubai Police conducted an experiment at their headquarters to determine the impact of a burning cigarette on plants and the results confirm it was the cause of the fire. While no casualties were reported with the fire, more than 30 apartments were damaged.
