A new traffic lane on Sheikh Zayed Road is expected to ease severe rush-hour gridlock and trim commute times following the completion of a major road-widening initiative by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The RTA expanded a two-kilometre section of the highway near the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall Metro Station, increasing the total capacity from six lanes to seven. The additional northbound lane directly serves motorists travelling towards the busy Dubai World Trade Centre Intersection. According to official figures released by the authority, the project increases total corridor capacity by 17% and is projected to cut peak-hour travel times across the segment by up to 10%.
The additional lane provides vital relief along one of the nation's most congested transit corridors. The upgrade also directly benefits access to major cultural and commercial destinations, including the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the Museum of the Future, and nearby residential districts.
The targeted widening operates in tandem with the ongoing Dubai World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project, which aims to replace the legacy roundabout with a signalised surface junction and five direct-access bridges.
