Supermarkets across Abu Dhabi will be required to clear high-fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) food and beverage products from checkout counters, store entrances, and end-of-aisle displays under new mandatory regulations taking effect on 1 January 2027.
The policy targets high-traffic "temptation zones" inside retail outlets larger than 4,000 square feet, and extends to online grocery applications, banning prominent pop-ups or auto-suggest add-ons for unhealthy items during checkout.
The regulation does not restrict the sale of confectionery, crisps, or sugary beverages. Items classified as less nutritious under the emirate’s nutritional rating system will remain available in regular store aisles.
Some major retailers have already begun adapting their premises ahead of the compliance deadline.
