Overflowing with cafés and restaurants in every nook and corner, Dubai is well-known for its diverse culinary scene. In a city where new cafés crop up by the day, standing out usually means going bigger, louder or trendier. Emirati sprinter and entrepreneur Musa Khalfan took the road less travelled, and it worked!
Musa's natural talent for sprinting earned him accolades in the 100 metres and 200 metres races. Well-known as the UAE’s fastest man, Musa broke the UAE record for a 100 metre run in 2016, crossing the finish line in just 10.54 seconds.
While Musa’s athletic career flourished, his entrepreneurial ambitions continued to grow alongside it. Founder of MK Barber Shop, and MKI Investments, Musa has now launched MK Café at Dubai Court, Al Manara Centre.
The concept is built around three simple ideas: quality, efficiency and consistency. The café offers premium coffee, signature cold brews, matcha, speciality drinks, fresh meals, balanced snacks and convenient grab-and-go options, all designed for people with busy, fast-moving lives.
So, what makes MK Café stand out in Dubai’s ever-buzzing food scene? Connector caught up with the entrepreneur himself to find out more!
Built From A Personal Need
For Musa, the café began not as a trend-driven business idea, but as a practical response to a gap he experienced himself. As an athlete and entrepreneur constantly on the move, he found it difficult to find places that offered clean, high-quality food that was also quick and consistent.
Musa shared that too often, convenience came at the expense of nutrition, while healthier options were not always efficient enough for people on a schedule. MK Café was created to solve that problem, a place where customers do not have to choose between quality and convenience.
“I struggled to find places that offer clean, quality food that is quick and consistent. Most options either compromise on nutrition or take too long. I wanted to create something that fills that gap, not just for me, but for people who value both their time and what they consume.”
That thinking also feeds into a much broader ambition. Musa shared that this venture was a bigger vision for him as an entrepreneur. “I’ve always been focused on building something long-term, not just one business. MK Café is my first step into the food and beverage space, but more importantly, it is a foundation for a wider lifestyle brand under MKI Investments.”
For Musa, it was about creating concepts that reflected how people live today and MK Café is just the beginning of expanding into other areas that align with that lifestyle.

That said, launching a new hospitality business in uncertain regional conditions might seem like a risk, but Musa’s outlook was straightforward. “There's never a perfect time. If you wait for the ideal moment, you'll wait forever,” he said. What gave Musa confidence was his trust in the UAE’s leadership and the stability, opportunity and optimism that the country continues to foster, even in more challenging moments. Dubai, he says, does not stop, and difficult times can sharpen focus rather than derail it.
That mindset is rooted in sport. Musa approaches business pressure in the same way he approached competition: with discipline, adaptability and a strong emphasis on execution.
A Café Designed Around Real Life
MK Café’s philosophy is deliberately clear. Instead of offering an oversized menu or trying to cater to everyone, the café has a more focused and intentional approach. Musa curated the menu to keep operations tight, reduce waste and ensure consistency, while still delivering enough choice for customers looking for coffee, a quick meal or a short pause in the middle of a demanding day.
“I kept coming back to one question: if I walked in as a customer, what would I expect? The answer was always the same, good food, no waiting, and the same experience every single time. So, we built everything around that. The menu is simple, the processes are streamlined, and the team is trained to focus on speed without compromising quality. It’s about making the experience feel easy and reliable, not complicated.”

Menu aside, location was also a major part of the strategy. Musa chose Al Manara Centre because of its consistent footfall and central accessibility. As a hub for government services, the area naturally attracts professionals and residents looking for something quick, dependable and convenient. “The café’s location is also very central, making it ideal for people to grab quality coffee, a quick meal, or even have a meeting. Although the centre closes earlier, the café has extended hours, which gives customers a quieter space to sit and spend time beyond the usual rush.”
Musa says a large part of MK Café reflects his own daily routine and mindset. In sport, results come from doing the right things repeatedly, and Musa believes business works the same way. Strong systems are built through discipline, while loyalty is earned through consistency. “In sport, discipline is everything, and results come from doing the same things right every day. It’s exactly the same in business. Discipline helps you build strong systems, and consistency is what keeps them working. Whether it’s product quality, service, or operations, the goal is to deliver the same standard every day and build a loyal, returning customer base.”
Standing Out In A Saturated Market
Dubai’s café scene is one of the most competitive in the region, but Musa is not trying to win by being everything to everyone. “MK Café’s point of difference is its clarity,” Musa points out.
“We are very clear on what we are and what we are not. We are not trying to be everything for everyone. The focus is on delivering a reliable experience: quality food and beverages, done well, and served quickly. That clarity and consistency are what set us apart.”
That said, this being Musa’s first food and beverage venture, the biggest lesson he learnt is that perseverance is everything. Although Musa already has strong brand recognition through MK Barber Shop, he says food and beverage is a different challenge altogether. The fundamentals may be similar, but the food and beverage industry moves faster and leaves much less room for error.
“What helped is the network and community I’ve built through sport and through MK Barber Shop. It gives you a strong foundation and a consistent base of people who already believe in what you stand for. But more than anything, this is a learning curve for us.”

Looking Ahead
For now, Musa says the immediate priority is to get MK Café right. Establishing a clear identity, maintaining consistent quality and building something customers can recognise and return to are on top of Musa’s list.
“We’re not chasing growth just for the sake of it. We plan to expand into catering for private and corporate events. The same values that define the MK Café experience, quality, consistency, and efficiency, will guide our approach there as well. There’s strong demand in Dubai for catering that doesn’t compromise on food, and we want MK Café to be the trusted name, whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or hosting an event for a hundred guests.”
From there, Musa’s vision is to grow further under MKI Investments, particularly within lifestyle and retail, step by step, building something that truly lasts.
