December 2015: Ailie McNicol

Name: Ailie McNicol
Nationality: Scottish

How would you describe your teaching style?

Enthusiastic! Many students arrive with the attitude that history is boring so I work hard to prove to them that history is fun and relevant. I love incorporating technology into my lessons; it can make history come to life and allows all students to have a personal learning experience within my classroom.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

My mum tells me that after my first day at primary school I told her I wanted to be a teacher, however I think it was only at university that I began seriously considering it. I did a lot of volunteer work with disadvantaged children in Edinburgh and hearing their stories made me want to make a difference in their lives and teaching seemed like the best way for me to achieve this goal. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

Your best moment as a teacher?

One of my former students, a real troublemaker who took great pride in her appearance, emailed me to tell me that she had shaved her hair off and donated it to charity, so a wig could be made for young girls with cancer. I was so proud of her, I cried.

One sentence of advice to parents?

Spend time asking your child about their day and helping them with their homework. Nothing is more beneficial to us as teachers than knowing that we are supported by the parents.

What would your life quote be?

Be the change you wish to see in the world - Ghandi

Ailie is the Head of the History Department at Ajman Academy.
