Decision to reduce speed limits on Sheikh Zayed and Emirates Roads backtracked

Officials have backtracked on an earlier decision to reduce the speed limits on Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road from 120kph to 110kph. Officials from the Dubai Police and RTA Dubai previously said during meetings that the limit should fall and speed cameras be reset to 131 kph to improve safety on two of the country’s motorways. Lt Col Omar Ashour, director of traffic investigation at Al Rashidiya police station, said Emirates Road was one of the five most dangerous in Dubai.

"Ten deaths were reported in Dubai over the past two months, five of which occurred on the Emirates Road," he said.

At the road safety meeting, agreement was reached to launch campaigns to monitor lorries and report any driving offences. Dubai traffic police have increased patrols and radar on Dubai's most dangerous roads in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths.
