Be advised motorists! Abu Dhabi Police has announced its plan to abolish the 20kph speed limit buffer above the set speed limits displayed on the roads in the capital from 12 August onwards.
Abu Dhabi Police, the Department of Transport and the Urban Planning Department said the step has been taken to improve road safety in the Emirate.
The existing buffer allows motorists to travel at 20kph more than the set speed limit, without being fined or penalised. It means that if the advertised speed limit on the road is 120kph, the motorist can drive until 140kph and will only be fined if the speed is clocked at 141kph or above.
However under the new ruling, the fines will be issued to motorists who are caught driving 1kph above than the advertised speed limit on the road. Therefore if your vehicle’s speed-o-metre touches 121kph on a 120kph road, you can get a traffic ticket.
Major-General Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi, Commander-in-Chief of the Abu Dhabi Police and a member of the Executive Council, said that the decision to amend the speed limit on the roads was taken after several scientific studies. Maj Gen Mohammed urges motorists to respect the new speeding rules which are brought into action to solve rising congestion problems and road accidents in the Emirate.
