Free: Charging, parking, Salik and registration for electric vehicles in Dubai

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) have announced incentives to encourage Dubai motorists to use electric vehicles.

As an incentive, DEWA users will be able to have their electric vehicles charged by DEWA’s Green Charger electric vehicle charging stations, completely free. This incentive will last until the end of 2019 and will be exclusive to public charging stations but does not include home charging stations. There are currently 100 charging stations in Dubai with a further 100 to be added in 2018.

The RTA will provide free public parking, exemption from RTA electric vehicle registration and renewal fees, exemption from Salik’s tag fee, and arranging a special sticker for number plates.

The cost for charging electric vehicles by Green Chargers has been set at 29 fils per kilowatt. A Tesla electric vehicle for example would cost Dhs 29 to charge while an equivalent petrol version would cost Dhs 150 to refuel. This is a significant saving, compared to fuel-powered cars.
