RTA Announces 75% Completion Of Four Major Bridges In Dubai

RTA

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that 75% of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads improvement project is now finished. This project includes the building of four bridges spanning a total of 2,874 metres. These bridges are designed to accommodate a traffic capacity of up to 17,600 vehicles per hour.

What's The Current Update

The foundation and columns for the bridges are finished, and contractors are now focusing on tasks like casting bridge walls, installing iron supports, expanding roads, and setting up lighting and rainwater drainage networks. Additionally, they're managing traffic diversions needed to complete the bridge construction. The completion of one of the main bridges is anticipated by the second quarter of this year.

Commenting on this, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, RTA, said, “The project is part of a plan to upgrade Garn Al Sabkha Street, a crucial project linking Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It aims to ensure seamless traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, and Al Asayel Street.”

Upon completion, the project will significantly reduce distance and travel time by 40% for traffic travelling from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, towards Al Qusais and Deira. Peak hour travel time will be reduced from 20 minutes to 12 minutes. Additionally, it will cut journey time by 70%, from 21 minutes to 7 minutes, for traffic travelling from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayis Street, in the direction of Jebel Ali Port.

More Details On The Four Bridges

The project includes the construction of four bridges with specific purposes:

  1. The first bridge, spanning 943 metres, is located at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street. It consists of two lanes in each direction, accommodating 8,000 vehicles per hour. This bridge facilitates traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
  2. The second bridge, extending 601 metres, comprises two lanes and serves traffic moving from Garn Al Sabkha Street East towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and North towards Al Qusais and Deira. It has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
  3. The third bridge is a two-lane structure stretching 664 metres, designed to streamline traffic flow by separating traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading North to Al Yalayis Street, towards Jebel Ali Port. It can accommodate approximately 3,200 vehicles per hour.
  4. The fourth bridge spans 666 metres and includes two lanes, aiding in smooth traffic flow by separating traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to Dubai Production City entrances. It has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.

Lastly, the project involves road improvements spanning 7 kilometres, upgrading surface intersections on the service road alongside Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and installing street lighting, traffic signs, systems, drainage, and irrigation.
