To improve road safety and traffic management in Dubai, 14 artificial intelligence (AI) smart pedestrian crossing systems have been introduced in Dubai Silicon Oasis.
The pedestrian crossings, designed by Derq, a company which specialises in using AI to develop roadways, can detect pedestrians and cyclists that are approaching the crossings.
The system activates warning signs and lights whenever pedestrians are nearby through patented behaviour prediction models, which reduces the chances of people getting hit by vehicles while crossing.
The alerts are active depending on the time taken for pedestrians to cross the road, and deactivate when there is no one in the vicinity.
The system was tested for over two years, to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
