Review: Royal Shaheen

Man has always regarded the falcon as a symbol of force and courage, and these fast-flying predators have been used as trusted hunting companions for over 4000 years.

The falcon is also the national bird of the UAE, a status which recognises the importance of falconry in Emirati tradition and culture. The two main species found in the UAE are the Saqr (Saker) and Peregrine. Both were traditionally trapped during the autumn migration, used for hunting during the season and then released back into the wild. Due to this cycle of trap and release, Emiratis had to develop effective training methods so they could put the birds to work as soon as possible. As a result, Emiratis are now regarded as some of the best falconers in the world.

Although hunting with falcons was an important part of life in the UAE, it is now illegal, and today falconry is mainly enjoyed as a traditional sport.
