Adopting a cat? Make it a double!

Adopting your first cat may be a bit of a challenge at first, but adopting two cats in one go? It is actually easier than you think, believe it or not. Whether you are looking to get cats that have grown up together in the same foster home or little kittens that are siblings, their already existing relationship will make the transition to a new home much easier and give you a peace of mind, knowing that your cats will never be lonely and will have each other while you are away at work.

Cats were once considered to be solitary creatures. In many ways, there are solitary aspects to their behavioural patterns. However, we now know that most of them are in fact social animals who benefit from interaction with their own kind and other species.

Here are just some of the many benefits of having two cats:

  • Twice the love and twice the cuddles. You will have two different looking cats and two different personalities to cuddle, play and relax with, so if one likes to cuddle and the other one likes to play, you get the best of both.
  • Moving into a new home is scary for any animal. Each cat will comfort and reassure the other as they transition into your new home.
  • Boredom can lead to destructive behaviours, so adopting two cats can help protect your furniture from scratches and your shoes from being chewed on.
  • Two cats that have already formed a bond are happy to share the same toys, food, water bowls and scratching posts. Since you will have to provide all of the above even for a single cat, your expenses will not actually double. However, you will still have to vaccinate and spay/neuter them both, not forgetting to mention the possibility of having to buy two feline tickets when you travel back hom
  • Adopting cats can often cause behavioural problems such as boredom or separation anxiety. However, the bond between two cats who have grown up together becomes very strong and special. Watching two long-time cat companions curled up together as they nap in the afternoon sun is a truly precious sight.
  • While you are at work, your two cats can keep each other company. Instead of spending the day alone, they will have someone to talk to and play with.
