Speech and Language Difficulties in Young Children

Early Identification and Intervention

The early years are known as the ‘sensitive period’ for speech and language acquisition and children usually learn language without effort. Early identification and intervention during this sensitive period gives the best chance for recovery and prevention of further developmental challenges.

Delayed speech and language often leads to challenging behavior such as tantrums, aggression, withdrawal and low self-esteem. Development of social skills such as playing and talking with other children, making friends and expressing needs appropriately may also be affected. Children with language difficulties can often be labelled as the ones who do not follow instructions, do not listen or do not pay attention.

Without intervention the longer term effects on academic skills can be seen including difficulties in literacy and problem solving.
