First days with your baby

Having a baby is a major, life-changing occasion - do not be surprised to find that you go through a wide range of feelings. You may experience everything from ecstasy to worry and anxiety to joy. In addition to this, your feelings may change suddenly and erratically. On top of all this, as a mother you have just been through quite a bit physically. There is a good chance you will be exhausted, and both parents may start feeling the effects of sleep deprivation.

Every parent reacts differently. High levels of energy and the exhilaration of finally having the baby drive some mothers to soon 'forget' the difficulties of labour as they bound happily into motherhood. Other new mums are not as lucky.

The first few days and weeks after you have a baby can be exhausting however and it is important to take care of yourself and get as much rest as you can.

These suggestions can help new mums rest:
• Limit the number of visitors you have.
• Focus only on caring for your baby.
• Eat well and try to get sleep.
• Do not push yourself too hard.
• Try not to worry about household chores or cleaning.
• Ask for and accept help from friends and family.
