Day In The Life: Dr Ahmed Yacoub

Medical professionals play a critical role in ensuring the well-being of patients, by providing the best care and treatment to heal them from their ailments.

Dr Ahmed Yacoub, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Mediclinic Dubai Mall, is dedicated to the field of Orthopaedics, which caters to the treatment of injuries to the musculoskeletal system, including the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles.

After witnessing the toll taken on a person's body by sustaining an injury, Dr Ahmed Yacoub began studying medicine in Germany in 1997.

From there, Dr Ahmed Yacoub continued to treat patients in the country, improving their quality of life, before deciding to move to the UAE, where he has spent five years contributing and making a difference in the medical field.

In this feature, Dr Ahmed Yacoub shares with Connector his journey to finding his speciality in the medical field, and ways he likes to unwind after a busy day.

How does the day begin before heading into work?

My day typically starts with a nutritious breakfast, followed by 30 minutes of exercise. Spending quality time with my family is essential to me, and I often opt for juice over coffee in the morning. I find that classical music during my commute to work sets a positive tone for the day.

What was the most difficult case you have had to treat?

While I have encountered many challenging cases, one that stands out is when I had to treat a pregnant woman in her seventh month who had a broken leg. Managing the health of both the mother and baby in such a situation is extremely delicate. Treating pregnant women and children can be among the most sensitive and challenging cases in medicine.

What motivates you to keep coming back to work?

Several factors motivate me to return to work each day. The sense of teamwork among my colleagues, the positive atmosphere at Mediclinic units, and the camaraderie we share drive us all. Most importantly, the satisfaction of helping people regain their ability to enjoy sports and activities they love is immensely fulfilling.

How did you find your niche in the medical field?

My passion for sports and witnessing numerous sports-related injuries on the field led me to specialise in this area. I wanted to contribute to helping individuals perform at their best, not only physically but also mentally. Orthopaedics and sports medicine are not just about the body, it also nourishes the soul.

After a busy work day, what do you like to do to unwind?

To unwind after a busy workday, I prioritise getting a good night's sleep. I also enjoy connecting with friends, socialising, and spending quality time with my family. Additionally, taking a leisurely walk outside in pleasant weather conditions helps me relax.

What are some of your dreams and aspirations with your career?

I have a strong desire to advance in the field of surgery, specialising further in my chosen area. Additionally, holding the position of Head of the Surgical Department at Mediclinic Dubai Mall and acting as a medical director has piqued my interest in healthcare management and operational roles. I aspire to contribute significantly to the healthcare industry in these capacities.
