What is Movember and No-Shave November? Why Should You Care?

Welcome to N-Movember! Yes, you read that right. The month where you may notice your male friends grow out their facial hair. Unless you live in the middle-east where majority of men sports beards. Anyways, Movember, or also popularly known as “No-Shave November”, is an event meant to raise awareness about men’s health! For so many years it’s been considered “normal” for women to outlive men. Isn’t it strange that it was something never questioned? That’s what a bunch of guys thought when they started the trend. Men are dying younger, and we need to know why.

What is Movember?

Movember was founded by a group of friends in Australia who wanted to make the moustache popular again. The hype was quick to spread and the next year onwards decided to raise funds for prostate and testicular cancer. “We are all about the moustache and only the moustache,’ said Movember’s U.S. Director Mark Hedstrom. “What we’re asking them to do is participate by changing their appearance. What fosters is a conversation.” From conversation to awareness to action, that was the goal.

What is No-Shave November?

No-Shave November is an organization founded in the United States that encourages people to donate the money they normally would have used for hair grooming to the American Cancer Society. Unlike Movember, this group isn’t specific about the moustache and is open to beards and even encourages women to skip shaving their legs.

How to Join?

For guys, it’s up to you if you want to start with a fresh face in the beginning of the month and just let it grow out. Go with a moustache for Movember or sport a full-on beard for No-Shave November. Either way, you’re bringing awareness and saving money which could be donated for cancer research. For ladies, instead of splurging at a salon or purchasing razors, wax strips etc. this month, why not donate that to charity instead? You never know when your father, brother, husband or someone you know could be dealing with serious health issues.
